Coho at the river mouths; Hood Canal chums arrive

An exposed outer coast (Westport, La Push, Neah Bay), the Columbia mouth and Willapa Bay at the south end, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Puget Sound and Hood Canal — deep, cold fjords with points, kelp and steep shelves.

The water

The tide here
Mixed semidiurnal, 7–14 ft
Mixed semidiurnal — two highs and two lows a day, one pair much bigger than the other. Ranges grow toward the south Sound — 11 ft at Seattle, 14+ at Olympia. Salmon stack on the points on the change; halibut and lings only fish at slack on the big tides.

After a cold front
Winter storms close the coast bars and bring the steelhead; the Sound stays fishable for blackmouth. Summer upwelling and fog on the coast; afternoon westerlies in the Strait.
